This large-scale project, conceived by the artistic director of the Alexandrinsky Theater, Valery Fokin, opened the program of the Eighth International Theater Festival in the year of the 200th anniversary of the birth of M.Yu. Lermontov.
The most important task of this action was the creation of a stage composition accumulating the experience of the legendary performance of the Alexandrinsky Theater, staged by Vsevolod Meyerhold on the imperial stage almost a century ago, in February 1917.
Using visual images and stage-setting motives of Meyerhold’s “Masquerade” staging score, recreating as accurately as possible the performance of the great director’s scenographically, musically and rhythmically, the theater offers contemporary audiences to go on a unique expedition to the past.
Modern artistic and technological theater techniques make it possible to revive one of the most beautiful and harmonious performances of the past, conveying it in its entirety, in all its versatility. One of these faces was the new life of a unique collection of theatrical costumes and props of the “Masquerade” performance of 1917, recreated according to A.Ya. Golovin.
The study of the great performance of the early twentieth century in the play “Masquerade. Memories of the Future ”is combined with a deep insight into the problems of today. The text of "Masquerade" sounded from the mouths of the heroes of the 1917 performance and was picked up by contemporary artists. The Arbenin of the luminaries of the Alexandrinsky Theater, Yuri Mikhailovich Yuryev, and the Arbenin of the 21st Century, utter words written by a 26-year-old poet in the 19th century. And these words sound for us more than relevant. Modern man can not help but feel a special confused state of mind, anxiety at the turn of the times ...
