The play "The Cripple from Inishmaan Island" - the first of the trilogy about the Aran Islands - was written in 1996. It is based on a story from real history. In the early thirties of the 20th century, on the western coast of Ireland, the well-known director Robert Flaherty began shooting a documentary about Irish fishermen, which in 1934 was released in the movie entitled "The Man from Aran". This film told about the difficult life of the islanders, whose meaning is the struggle for existence, and was a hymn to a man who, despite hardships and everyday hard work, is the bearer of true knowledge and virtues.

The play of M. McDonagh unfolds on one of the islands adjacent to the one where the film is being shot. Heroes of his play, the playwright stripped unequivocally-excellent characteristics. His characters, at first glance, are evil, ugly foul-mouthed. But with each new turn of the plot, the playwright brings the heroes closer to the viewer and at their safe distance their pure souls open behind the ugly masks of malice and cruelty, trusting precisely these "strange" characters with lofty truths and a deep philosophy of being ...
